Anders als bspw. beim Fülldraht- oder Stabelektrodenschweißen
schmilzt die beim WIG-Schweißen verwendete Wolframelektrode wegen des hohen Schmelzpunktes von Wolfram nicht ab.
Stattdessen wird der Schweißzusatzwerkstoff in Draht- oder Stabform in den Lichtbogen gehalten und aufgeschmolzen. Zum Schutz des Schweißbads vor der Umgebungsluft kommen Schutzgase wie Helium oder Argon zum Einsatz.
Diese sind inert, sie gehen also keine chemischen Reaktionen mit den beteiligten Werkstoffen ein. Das WIG-Schweißen ist zwar etwas langsamer als das Metall-Inertgas-Schweißen (MIG),
bei dem die Drahtelektrode abschmilzt, es lassen sich jedoch deutlich höhere Nahtqualitäten erreichen. Auch ist eine sehr definierte Beeinflussung des Schweißbades in Form und Größe möglich,
daher eignet sich das WIG-Verfahren für das Auftrag- ebenso wie das Verbindungsschweißen in allen Positionen.
