Das Löten ist eine Fügetechnik zum Verbinden von zwei Werkstücken. Bei diesem Prozess entsteht eine flüssige Phase, entweder durch Schmelzlöten oder durch Diffusionslöten, d. h. Diffusion an den Grenzflächen. Im Gegensatz zum Schweißen wird das Werkstück dabei nicht in der Tiefe aufgeschmolzen. Es entsteht lediglich eine Oberflächenlegierung. Die Liquidustemperatur der beiden Grundstoffe wird bei diesem Fügeverfahren nicht überschritten.
Nachdem das Lot erstarrt ist entsteht eine stoffschlüssige Verbindung ähnlich dem Schweißen. Man unterscheidet beim Löten die Verfahren Hartlöten (>450 °C),
Weichlöten (<450 °C) sowie Hochtemperaturlöten (>900 °C).
